Remontowa Shipbuilding to Build New Rescue Vessel for Polish SAR Service

Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. has signed a contract to construct a multipurpose rescue vessel for the Polish Maritime Search and Rescue Service. The agreement was signed on 23 June in Gdynia by Sebastian Kluska, Director of the Maritime Search and Rescue Service, and Dariusz Jaguszewski, President of Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A.

The new vessel is intended to enhance the effectiveness of search and rescue operations in line with international SAR standards, while also contributing to the protection of human life and the marine environment. The contract is valued at nearly PLN 250 million and is co-financed from European Union funds under the FEnIKS programme (Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment) as well as from the state budget.

Key technical specifications

The vessel will be 65 metres in length and 13 metres in breadth, powered by four generating sets of 1,900 kW each, enabling a top speed of 15 knots. Its operational scope will include search and rescue at sea, combating marine pollution and environmental hazards, firefighting operations, emergency towing, and salvage assistance.

Statements from the ceremony

Arkadiusz Marchewka, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Infrastructure, highlighted the broader context of the investment:

“Today, the word ‘safety’ takes on many meanings. Along our coastline, activities are being carried out that ensure wide-ranging security — including energy security. We are building offshore wind farms and implementing more and more projects. The development of our rescue fleet must keep pace with this.”

Adam Ruszkowski, President of Remontowa Holding S.A., noted that the contract is part of a broader period of activity for the shipyard: “Within the last 30 days, we are signing our third contract. Two hydrographic vessels under the SAFE programme and now a third unit for the Polish state, also related to maritime safety in the broadest sense.” He also pointed out that the SAR vessel Sztorm, built by Remontowa Shipbuilding in 2012, continues to serve reliably — a fact that reinforced confidence in the new build.

Dariusz Jaguszewski, President of Remontowa Shipbuilding, underlined the strategic significance of the order:

“The execution of this contract, alongside the hydrographic vessel agreement signed in May, confirms the shipyard’s strong position in the segment of advanced specialist vessels for the maritime economy, state security, and marine environmental protection.”

Sebastian Kluska, Director of MSPiR, drew attention to the growing demand for rescue capacity on the Baltic Sea:

“When the P2 and P3 offshore wind fields become operational, up to 2,000 people will be going out to sea every day to work in those areas. Thanks to these modern vessels, we will be able to ensure their safety and, in the event of an emergency, a fast and safe return to shore.”

The new SAR vessel will serve alongside the existing unit Kapitan Poinc. The contract represents one of the most significant investments in maritime rescue infrastructure in Poland in recent years, reflecting the country’s expanding maritime economy and the growing importance of safety provision on the Baltic Sea.
