Another milestone reached at the T5 Terminal
Construction of the T5 Terminal has passed another major milestone. Reinforced concrete works on the outbound, inbound, ro-ro and temporary quays were completed on schedule, while advanced sanitary, electrical and road works continue in parallel.
NDI Group is building the deep-water T5 Terminal on the site of Baltic Hub in Gdańsk on behalf of Istrana. The investment includes two cargo quays, a ro-ro berth, a roughly 21-hectare storage and maneuvering yard, and the necessary technical infrastructure. In its first phase, the terminal will serve as an installation base for offshore wind farms, handling the receipt, storage, assembly and loading of components, with the possibility of being adapted for container handling in the future.
In recent months, the key works on the quays’ reinforced concrete structures were completed — one of the most demanding stages of the project, requiring close coordination between construction teams and the involvement of numerous contractor crews.
“We’ve now passed our third milestone. The T5 Terminal quays — outbound, inbound, ro-ro and temporary — were completed within the contractual deadline, without delays. Since October 2025, we’ve used 36,000 m³ of concrete and nearly 3,700 tonnes of steel. At the peak of this phase, more than 150 manual workers and a dozen or so engineering staff were on site, and thanks to strong coordination within the NDI team and good cooperation with subcontractors, the deadline was met in full,” said Jacek Pawlak, Hydrotechnical Works Manager at NDI Group.
At the same time, the project is entering its next stage: the construction of the sanitary infrastructure needed for the terminal’s operation. Networks and installations are now being built that will eventually handle water and wastewater management as well as environmental protection across the site.
“We’ve begun work on installations including storm drainage, sanitary sewage, water supply and fire protection systems. We’ve completed the tie-ins at the T3 terminal, which were essential for connecting to the new infrastructure. Ahead of us is the installation of pre-treatment systems reaching as deep as 6 metres below the target ground level, including a separator [for removing petroleum-based contaminants] and a settling tank [for capturing sediments and suspended solids], which are being prepared at the outbound quay,” said Patrycja Maron, Construction Engineer at NDI Group.
Advanced work is also under way on the power infrastructure. Construction has begun on the terminal’s lighting system and an extensive cable duct network that will eventually serve all of the facility’s electrical installations.
“We’ve entered the lighting construction phase, which involves installing lighting masts over 34 metres tall. In total, the terminal will be lit by 26 such masts. The electrical installation is based on cable ducting made from 160 mm diameter pipes. A total of 135 km is planned, of which around 25 percent has been completed so far,” said Robert Kondratowicz, Electrical Works Engineer at NDI Group.
Equally important is the work on the terminal’s pavement and ground preparation for future operations. Given the facility’s role as a base for assembling and preparing offshore wind farm components, much of the current effort is focused on material deliveries and the construction of the pavement’s structural layers.
“We’re now bringing in aggregate for the upper pavement layer as well, which arrives by sea. In total, we need to install more than 300,000 tonnes of aggregate, plus 4 km of drainage pipes and nearly a million m² of geosynthetics, including 200,000 m² of separation geomembrane. Given the scale of the project, it was necessary to stockpile large quantities of materials in advance — logistics plays a key role in projects of this type,” noted Paweł Śpiewak, Deputy Project Director at NDI Group.
Work continues at a high pace across the site, with all teams involved in the project operating in full coordination. The project is being carried out on behalf of Istrana and is co-financed with EU funds under the National Recovery Plan (KPO) and by the Polish Development Fund. NDI Group is the General Contractor.
