SMM trade fair in Hamburg postponed to 2021

The International Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment, Machinery and Technology Exhibition SMM in Hamburg, one of the largest maritime trade fairs in the world, was postponed until February 2021. This was the result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The SMM fair is the largest and most important event of the world’s shipbuilding industry. Every two years it brings together the world’s leaders in shipbuilding and repair, production of state-of-the-art ship equipment, marine technology and engineering and decision-makers in the broadly understood maritime economy. Originally, the event was to take place from 8 to 11 September, but the coronavirus pandemic forced the organizers to change the date.

After intensive consultations, the Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC), its partners and exhibitors’ representatives agreed on a new date, from 2 to 5 February 2021. This means that the SMM will be the first international meeting of the maritime industry in the new year.

The dynamic development of COVID-19 and the resulting ban on major events left us no choice but to postpone the SMM until next year – said Bernd Aufderheide, President and CEO of Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC). – Finding the right new time frame for SMM was not an easy task for us and we are glad that we managed to do that – he added.

Germany is beginning to ease its restrictions after it has gained recognition for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, but the process of lifting restrictions takes time.

The last edition of SMM in Hamburg attracted more than 2,200 exhibitors and about 50,000 visitors.
