Unusual cargo at the ferry terminal in Świnoujście

From Dąbrowa Górnicza, a train depot with an unusual load arrived at the ferry terminal in Świnoujście on Wednesday. The wagons were loaded with rails. The longest consist measured 140 metres and carried rails 120 metres long. Smaller trainsets carried rails 60 metres long.

The wagons were loaded onto the ferry Polonia, sailing to Sweden.

According to representatives of the Szczecin-Świnoujście port, this was the first transhipment of such an unusual transport.

The ferry terminal in Świnoujście has been extended and modernised in recent years – in its new form it has been operating since autumn 2023. Worth more than PLN 185 million, the investment by the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority has significantly improved the handling of intermodal transport at this location. As a result, rail shipments can now be safely and effectively received at the site. Significantly, the Swinoujscie ferry terminal is the only one in Poland to be adapted to handle rail ferries.

As part of this investment, a railway siding was created, the ferry berths were deepened while at the same time strengthening the bottom and road infrastructure was built, thanks to which the terminal gained better accessibility from the land.

The investment also included the rebuilding of the existing loading ramp to new technical parameters and to achieve a width of 35 metres and a carrying capacity of 180 tonnes.

The terminal is now an important element of the Swinoujscie-Trelleborg Motorway of the Sea, subsidised through the EU’s Connecting Europe project. The aim of this project is to better integrate the Szczecin-Świnoujście port complex into the North-South maritime transport corridor.
