The Baltica 2 team at the T5 terminal in Gdańsk

Another stage of intensive work on the construction of the T5 terminal in Gdańsk, which will be used for the storage, pre-assembly and installation of wind turbines for the Baltica 2 project, has been completed. During their visit to the construction site, representatives of Ørsted and PGE reviewed the progress of the work and discussed the upcoming milestones of the investment.

Work on the construction of T5 in Gdańsk is at an advanced stage The so-called land reclamation has been completed, with a total of 3.26 million m³ of sand delivered. The construction and anchoring of the quay walls and the installation of over 1,850 piles on all three quays are underway. Levelling work is continuing, and reinforced concrete work has begun in parallel, including the construction of the first sections of the quays.

It is from Gdańsk that we will install 107 turbines for the Baltica 2 project, which is planned for 2027. Timely delivery to the installation port in Gdańsk is a key factor in the success of the entire project. A visit to the construction site is a great opportunity to see the development of the offshore wind energy programme in Poland with your own eyes. As the largest renewable energy project, Baltica 2 will be a key element of Poland’s green transition, producing clean energy that will meet the needs of approximately 2.5 million Polish households,” said Agata Staniewska Bolesta, Country Manager at Ørsted Polska.

“Terminal T5 is not only essential for the timely implementation of the Baltica 2 project, but is also an important investment for Pomerania. This project shows that the offshore wind sector is bringing a powerful modernisation impulse to the national port infrastructure. For at least the next 10-15 years, the T5 terminal in Gdańsk will operate for the development of offshore wind energy, and after that time it will be used depending on future market needs, said Bartosz Fedurek, President of the Management Board of PGE Baltica. ‘The on-schedule implementation of the project by the Polish company Istrana also confirms that the domestic industry has the competence, ambition and potential to create world-class solutions and participate in Poland’s energy transition,’ added Bartosz Fedurek.

“The construction of the T5 terminal is a strategic project for Istrana, confirming our role as a key logistics hub for the development of offshore wind energy in the Baltic Sea region. The work is proceeding according to schedule, and its scale shows how important this undertaking is both for the Baltica 2 project and for the long-term development of the port of Gdańsk. The cooperation with PGE and Ørsted on this project is an example of an effective combination of the competences of international investors and Polish port infrastructure, supporting the country’s energy transition,” added Lech Paszkowski, President of Istrana.

In the coming months of the T5 project, construction works will be carried out, including the continuation of reinforced concrete and pile works, the construction of working platforms, the delivery of prefabricated elements and the commencement of works related to the network infrastructure. At the same time, the levelling of the site and soil reinforcement will be finalised, which will allow the terminal to be fully prepared for the next phases of the investment.

In 2024, PGE and Ørsted, in cooperation with Istrana, signed an agreement to lease port space for the construction of the T5 installation terminal in Gdańsk. The modern terminal, covering over 21 hectares, will be a key logistics facility for the Baltica 2 project. Thanks to its well-thought-out infrastructure concept, T5 will allow for the simultaneous servicing of jack-up installation vessels and ro-ro transport units, supporting the development of offshore wind energy in Poland.

Baltica 2, with a capacity of 1.5 GW, will be the largest offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea and will supply approximately 2.5 million households with clean, renewable energy. The Baltica 2 project is financed by the National Recovery Plan in the amount of PLN 5.5 billion (part of the financing from PGE). Ørsted is financing the project from its own resources.
