Russia: we are ready to open fire on any foreign ship that enters our waters
We are ready to open fire on any foreign ship or submarine that illegally enters our territorial waters, Deputy Chief of the Operations Department of Russia’s General Staff Stanislav Gadzhimagomedov said, as quoted by Interfax.
The statement came two days after Moscow reported that a U.S. submarine had violated the border in Russia’s territorial waters off the Kuril Islands in the Far East. The U.S. has denied that it is conducting a military operation in Russian territorial waters.
Relations between the U.S. and Russia are increasingly strained as the likelihood of a Russian attack on Ukraine increases, Reuters points out. The Kremlin denies that it is planning such actions, despite amassing more than 100,000 troops on the border with its neighbor.
According to Gadzhimagomedov quoted by Interfax agency, Russia has the capability to repel an attack by the U.S. fleet in the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea, nevertheless it has no such force in the country’s far eastern waters.
On Saturday, the press service of the Russian navy reported that more than 30 Russian ships sailed to the Black Sea to take part in Black Sea Fleet exercises.
