Progress in the construction of Polish ferries
Representatives of Polish Steamship Company (Polsteam) and Polish Ferry expressed satisfaction with the pace of the contract for the new Ro-Pax ferries during a visit to Remontowa Shiprepair Yard S.A., the general contractor for the vessels.
Remontowa Shiprepair Yard S.A. is continuing the construction of the Ro-Paxes, ordered by Polskie Ferries, which will charter them to national shipowners once the units have been taken over. The first ferry, with the shipyard number NB101, is to be handed over to Unity Line from the Polish Shipping group, as is the second (NB102), while the third will go to Polska Żegluga Bałtycka.
As a reminder, ferry NB101, which launched on 31 October last year, is currently in the fitting-out phase.
The project is 85 per cent advanced, with all major supplies of equipment and sections completed and the funnel and masts installed. Work is underway to prepare systems for commissioning, lay cables and fit out the superstructure. The first commissioning and technical acceptance is expected to begin this autumn.
The second ferry (NB102) is 60 per cent advanced. Its production cycle is analogous to that of the first ferry. The shipyard has already completed the construction of the largest block (B3), housing the engine room, constructed from spatial sections on a shipyard semi-submersible heavy-lift barge. An LNG cryogenic tank and four engines (generating sets) are already installed inside, and maintenance work has begun on this part of the hull.
Most of the other hull blocks for the second ferry, built by subcontractor companies (Marine Projects, Montex, Remontowa Shipbuilding, Holm), are already practically ready, being in the maintenance phase; the first shipyard transports are taking place.
Last Wednesday, block B2 arrived from the Marine Projects shipyard, while block B1 is in the process of the final steel and outfitting work. After joining the completed B3 block on the semi-submersible barge, it is planned to undock it from the barge at the beginning of next month and haul the stern hull megablock to the floating dock for integration with the other blocks that will successively arrive at the shipyard, following the technology used for the NB101 unit.
At the same time, work is underway on the prefabrication of the superstructure blocks, which will be transported and set on the hull of the second ferry once it has been launched.
Last Wednesday, Polish Ferry and Polsteam’s representatives watched the construction of the ferry.
– We are pleased with the progress of the work, you can see the great commitment of the task teams and all the employees of the shipyard. It is a great satisfaction to watch the ferry being built live – says Dariusz Doskocz, interim manager of Polsteam.
– It is worth emphasising that at every stage of this project, we can say that we have had very good cooperation with the contractor – Gdańsk Shiprepair Yard. We are informed on an ongoing basis about the execution of subsequent stages of the ferry’s construction, which are proceeding according to the assumed schedule,” adds a representative of the Polish Steamship Company.
