PGE: Baltica 2 with construction permits for part of offshore wind farm

Baltica 2 has received construction permits for part of the offshore wind farm, PGE said on Friday. It indicated that the permits relate to the construction of 107 wind turbines and four offshore transformer stations.

Polish Energy Group (PGE) said on Friday that the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm project already has a set of permits from the Pomeranian Voivode. The investment is being developed by PGE and Ørsted.

As stated in the announcement, the permits relate to the construction of wind turbines and offshore transformer stations.

“These are the last permits necessary to start construction. Both building permits issued by the Pomeranian Voivode relate to the project entitled Complex of offshore wind farms with a maximum total capacity of 1,500 MW together with the technical infrastructure related to the preparatory, execution and operation stages (Offshore Wind Farm Baltica 2),” – PGE indicated.

The company added that the first of the acquired permits covers the construction of four offshore substations. “The second relates to the construction of 107 offshore wind turbines together with the power and telecommunications network,” – PGE reported.

It pointed out that the construction project and the application for the building permit were developed by a consortium formed by Ramboll and the Gdansk-based design office Projmors. The companies are currently working on the preparation of the technical design.

“PGE and Ørsted have already contracted all the necessary components for the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, and have signed contracts for the installation of foundations, turbines and cables. The partners have also selected a general contractor for the onshore connection infrastructure. The final step before the start of construction will be for the investors to take the final investment decision (FID),” – PGE informed.

PGE also reminded that Baltica 2 is one of the two – along with Baltica 3 – phases of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm. PGE and Ørsted plan to complete the construction of the Baltica 2 stage with a capacity of about 1.5 GW by the end of 2027, while the Baltica 3 stage with a capacity of about 1 GW by 2030. It noted that Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 will form the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm with a total capacity of 2.5 GW, which will “significantly contribute to the transformation of the Polish energy sector by providing green energy to almost 4 million households in Poland”.

PGE Group’s offshore wind energy programme envisages the construction of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm by 2030, implemented in two phases – Baltica 2 and Baltica 3, with a total installed capacity of up to 2.5 GW. Then, after 2030, the Baltica 1 Wind Farm with a capacity of approximately 0.9 GW will be added to the Group’s portfolio. By acquiring new areas for development in the Baltic Sea, the PGE Group will be able to build further offshore wind farms by 2040. Together with the projects currently under construction, this will allow it to reach more than 7 GW of installed offshore capacity. “This means that the PGE Group is the largest investor in offshore wind energy in Poland in terms of the capacity planned to be installed,” – PGE indicated.
