PGE and Ørsted selected General Contractor to build onshore connection for Baltica 2
PGE Group and Ørsted signed an agreement with GE Vernova, represented in Poland by GE Power Sp. z o.o., and Polimex Mostostal, the consortium which will construct the onshore infrastructure necessary for exporting power from Baltica 2 – one of two stages of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm.
“This year we are starting the construction of an onshore transformer station and onshore export lines for Baltica 2, which constitute the connection infrastructure necessary to deliver 1.5 GW of power from our first offshore wind farm. It is with the onshore connection that the construction of an offshore power plant begins. The finalization of this contract was possible thanks to specialists from PGE Baltica, our subsidiary company developing PGE Group’s offshore program”, commented Wojciech Dąbrowski, president of the Management Board of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna. “Baltica 2 will deliver electricity needed by the Pomerania region, which for most part is currently supplied from the south of Poland. The additional source will increase energy security not only of the region, but of the entire country. The first electricity from Baltica 2 will be fed to the Polish Power System in 2027,” he added.
“Last year we managed to sign all contracts for the supply of offshore components, as well as some installation contracts – the preparation of which Ørsted was responsible for. With the signing of the contract for building onshore infrastructure necessary for exporting power from Baltica 2 project, we are moving a big step closer to the realization of this pioneering project for offshore wind energy in Poland,” said Agata Staniewska-Bolesta, Managing Director of Ørsted Offshore Poland.
“We are immensely proud to have been chosen for this critical project for Poland’s energy transition and security. Together with our consortium partner Polimex Mostostal, we are ready to bring our expertise and cutting-edge technology to Baltica 2 to ensure the efficient integration of its energy into the Polish Power System,” said Johan Bindele, Head of Grid Systems Integration at GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business.
The onshore connection infrastructure for Baltica 2 will be built in the Pomerania region of Poland, in the vicinity of Osieki Lęborskie, in the Choczewo commune, in the Wejherowo district. General Contractor will implement the contract in the Engineering, Procurement and Construction mode. The task comprises developing the 275/400 kV high-voltage transformer substation and onshore export cable lines necessary for transmitting the power to the Polish Power System. The first construction works are planned to start in 2024 while testing and putting the connection infrastructure online is scheduled for 2026 and 2027.
Baltica 2 is one of the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm stages – next to Baltica 3. PGE and Ørsted plan to deliver Baltica 2 of 1.5 GW capacity by the end of 2027 and Baltica 3 of 1 GW capacity by 2030. The project is subject to the final investment decision. Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 will create the Baltica Offshore Wind Farm of 2,5 GW total capacity. It will contribute significantly to Poland’s transition to green energy, delivering clean energy to nearly four million households in Poland.
