More than 58 million tonnes of goods handled in nine months of this year in the Port of Gdansk
The Port of Gdansk summed up the three quarters of this year. A total of over 58 million tonnes of goods were handled in this period. Liquid fuels, mainly crude oil and petroleum products, continued to be the dominant cargo group, accounting for more than half of all transshipments.
The main operator, Naftoport terminal, is breaking transshipment records year after year. Everything indicates that this year will be similar. Its turnover in the first three quarters amounted to approximately 30 million t. This is nearly 8 per cent more than in the same period last year.
The current handling capacity is 36 million tonnes of oil and 4 million tonnes of petroleum products per year. In addition, the company is preparing for expansion, planning the construction of a sixth loading berth, which will enable an increase in oil throughput by a further 9 million tonnes per year.
In second place in the Port of Gdansk in terms of volume is general cargo, mainly containerised cargo. General cargo terminals, including the container terminal Baltic Hub, handled 17.7 million tonnes of goods (4.5 per cent more than in the same period last year).
In third place is coal, although here we have a decrease of as much as 49 per cent. In nine months, coal terminals handled 5.7 million t. (mainly imports), compared to over 11 million t in 2023.
Bulk cargo turnover at the Port of Gdansk amounted to around 2.6 million t and grain to over 2 million t. (down nearly 1 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively). The biggest declines were in low-volume commodities: ore (down 62 per cent) and timber (56 per cent).
– ‘This year, we have a lower volume of reloaded coal compared to 2022 and 2023, when, due to the need to ensure energy security, the Port of Gdansk became the centre of coal reloading in Poland,’ explains Dorota Pyć, CEO of the Port of Gdansk Authority S.A. – Total transshipments for the three quarters fell by 4.6 per cent compared to the same period last year. However, there are still three months left until the end of this year. There are many indications that we will end it with a good result, although probably lower due to lower coal handling.
The financial and transshipment results of Polish ports were commented on by Arkadiusz Marchewka, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, on Platform X:
– It is very good. Comparing year-on-year, net profit increased in: Port of Gdansk by 30.25 million (+17%) Port of Gdynia by 20.43 million (+23%) Port of Szczecin-Świnoujście by 22.37 million (+25%). These are really good figures, which show that putting the ports in the hands of professionals, as I announced, brings concrete results. As far as transhipments are concerned, excluding coal, which the previous government imported in excessive quantities, it is also good. Overall, Polish ports recorded a slight increase in transshipments,’ he wrote.
