Head of Nord Stream 2 climate foundation refuses to disband
The dissolution of the climate foundation set up to support Nord Stream 2’s activities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern cannot be implemented for legal reasons, according to Erwin Sellering (SPD), chairman of the foundation and former prime minister of this eastern German state.
As “Die Welt” comments on Friday, Sellering wants to continue the controversial foundation “against the explicit will of the parliament and the state government”.
– The required dissolution is not possible under the founding law. For us, as a foundation, its liquidation is not an option,” Sellering stressed on Friday.
The state foundation, founded in early 2021, has been led by Sellering since the beginning. Controversy arose over the fact that the actual purpose of the creation of the “climate foundation” was supposed to be its business activities, aimed at helping the Russian company Gazprom to complete the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea, circumventing US sanctions.
Construction of NS 2 was completed in autumn 2021.
– The economic area is in a state of liquidation, Sellering confirmed, adding that continuing to work on climate protection is the most important task of the century.
The documents made public show that Gazprom representatives had a direct influence on the creation of the foundation’s statute. The largest donor to the foundation was Nord Stream 2, which contributed 20 million euros.
