Construction Progresses on T5 Terminal in Gdansk Port
Construction work on Terminal T5 at the Baltic Hub container terminal in Gdansk is progressing steadily, according to contractor NDI Group. The investment, covering approximately 21 hectares, will initially serve as a base for offshore wind turbine installations for Polish Offshore Wind Farms in the Baltic Sea. The project is being carried out on behalf of Istrana company and co-financed by the Polish Development Fund.
Concrete results are already visible at the construction site – most of the cofferdam work has been completed, anchor installation is underway, and work related to terminal reclamation has intensified.
The construction will include two cargo handling quays, a Ro-Ro berth with mooring and fender dolphins, and a storage and maneuvering area with a total surface of approximately 21 hectares.
Currently, backfilling work for anchor installation is being carried out using, among others, the dredger Vox Apolonia, one of the largest LNG-powered vessels. The work is performed using the rainbowing method – a mixture of sand and water is discharged through nozzles from the ship’s bow, creating an underwater embankment that prepares the seabed for further operations. Simultaneously, anchor installation from pontoons continues – all to ensure proper cooperation of the quay wall during subsequent backfilling stages and reinforced concrete works.
“All construction processes are interconnected vessels, meaning one operation opens fronts for the next. We have an exceptionally tight schedule, which is why we execute all these works with the highest precision and care, while ensuring safety,” says Łukasz Jagalski, Deputy Construction Manager from NDI Group.
Delivery of all steel profiles for quay walls has been completed. Currently, anchor installation continues on the outbound quay. Anchoring beams, so-called tie-rods, are also being installed to strengthen the wall structure before mounting the anchors themselves. All these works are carried out in parallel and with great precision to not only meet deadlines but also ensure the highest quality of execution.
Cofferdam work for both outbound and inbound quays has been completed, and the coming months will be crucial for implementing subsequent phases.
“I can say with full confidence that the entire implementation team is excellently handling the high bar that has been set. The weather is favorable so far, and regarding the next stages of our work, we have contracted good subcontractors from the world’s leading companies. We look calmly at the milestones ahead because we know we are prepared for them,” adds Paweł Śpiewak, Deputy Project Director from NDI Group.
The outbound quay, approximately 450 meters long, will be adapted to handle jack-up vessels used for offshore wind farm installation, while the inbound quay, approximately 350 meters long, together with a Ro-Ro berth of about 105 meters, will serve to receive deliveries of offshore wind farm components.
Within the planned storage area, work will be conducted related to preliminary assembly of individual wind farm components, which will then be loaded onto vessels in the loading zone along the outbound quay. The remaining part of the storage area includes storage zones and reserved space for social and administrative buildings that will serve logistics processes and those related to wind farm assembly.
The planned completion date for the investment is the third quarter of 2026. NDI Group serves as the general contractor for the works.
