Ulstein Color Hybrid with the title of Norwegian “Ship of the Year”
awarded by the editors of the trade publication “Skipsrevyen”, this time received a passenger-car ferry with electric drive Color Hybrid built, in subcontract for a Norwegian shipyard, partly in Poland.
The award was presented during the Nor-Shipping Fair, which started today near Oslo, by the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, Sveinung Rotevatn. The winners were accompanied by the heir to the throne of Norway, Prince Haakon.

The ship will be handed over by Ulstein shipyard
after the end of the outfitting and sea trials carried out in Norway. As partly equipped, it was built in Gdynia, by the shipyard Crist SA.
– Color Hybrid opens a new era in the passenger-car ferry segment with technical solutions that go far in the green shift”, said the head of the jury and editor-in-chief of Skipsrevyen, Gustav-Erik Blaalid.
Color Hybrid can carry 2,000 passengers and 500 cars and is the world’s largest hybrid ferry.
– Norway has already shown the world how to create an electric car revolution, says Secretary of State at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, Sveinung Rotevatn. Now we are going to move the ‘green change’ to the sea. We have a proud tradition as a maritime nation and by focusing on green shipping we will secure a leading position in a low-carbon society.
“Color Hybridcomes with a large battery pack that allows emission-free manoeuvring through the fjord and into and out of the port of Sandefjord. This was one of the requirements reported by the municipality of Sandefjord when stakeholders were invited to apply for a licence for this ferry crossing. – This is the proud Mayor of Sandefjord, Bjørn Ole Gleditsch.

said Color Line CEO Trond Kleivdal.
Color Line’s investments are based on supporting the efforts of governments and the international community to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The shipping company has started, among other things, building onshore electricity connections for ships in Norwegian ports where its ships call. Since May this year, Kiel has also launched a power supply for ferries from land, which can be used by Color Line ferries.
“The construction of the world’s largest plug-in hybrid vessel is in line with the company’s ambitions to further develop sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions in Norwegian shipping,” says Kleivdal.
“In addition to the positive impact on climate and the environment, the great advantage is the knowledge transfer within the project. More than 70 % of the equipment suppliers for this ship come from the Norwegian maritime cluster,” says Trond Kleivdal, CEO.
Color Hybrid will reduce NOx emissions in urban areas to zero and emissions at CO₂ will reduce by 33% compared to a conventional car-passenger ferry of similar size. The reduction in fossil fuel consumption will be more than 20%.

“Fosen designed the ship according to future requirements,” says general planner Per Edvin Tande and CEO Anders Straumsheim from Fosen Yard. “The ship was designed to meet the environmental requirements of the municipality of Sandefjord and in line with Color Line’s desire to optimise energy consumption. On board are the batteries manufactured by Siemens in Trondheim and the transmissions, rudders and drive systems from Brunvoll in Volda. The ship has already attracted a lot of attention worldwide. – they both say.
The main actors honoured with the Ship of the Year award are the market participants representing the best that the maritime industry in Norway has to offer. These include Fosen Yard AS with experience in designing car-passenger ferries, Ulstein Verft AS, which has built quality ships for generations, and Color Line, which has transported millions of passengers, cars and cargoes between neighbouring countries and inside Norway.
In addition, the municipality of Sandefjord is proud to have established clear environmental requirements that create innovation in the maritime sector and reduce emissions that contribute to climate change.
The remaining ships nominated this year for the final award of the Color Hybrid ferry were: Ronja Storm – designed in Norway and built in Turkey, the world’s largest vessel for transporting live fish and Roald Amundsen from the Norwegian shipyard Kleven – expeditionary cruise ship with hybrid electric drive, adapted to sailing in polar regions. The latter is built from the sketches and blocks supplied by the Gdansk company Montex.
