Ocean Winds Signs Turbine Supply Agreement with Siemens Gamesa for BC-Wind Baltic Sea Project
Ocean Winds has entered into a strategic agreement with Siemens Gamesa for the supply of offshore wind turbines for the BC-Wind project in the Polish Baltic Sea, marking a significant milestone in Poland’s renewable energy development.
Project Overview
The BC-Wind offshore wind farm is located approximately 23 kilometers north of the shore, off the coast of the Krokowa and Choczewo municipalities in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. The project is designed to achieve a planned capacity of up to 390 MW across a total farm area of 90.94 km².
Turbine Supply Agreement
Under the conditional agreement, Siemens Gamesa will deliver 26 wind turbines, each with a nominal capacity of 14 MW and a Power Boost feature capable of increasing capacity to 15 MW. The contract also includes comprehensive service maintenance provisions to ensure optimal performance throughout the project’s operational life.
These turbines received IECRE type certification last summer, confirming their compliance with international quality and safety standards. The installation and commissioning of these turbines are scheduled for 2028, with the first power expected to flow from the wind farm in the same year.
Environmental and Economic Impact
The implementation of this advanced offshore wind technology will generate clean, zero-emission energy capable of supplying electricity to approximately 488,000 households in Poland. This represents a substantial contribution to Poland’s energy transition and enhanced energy security.
Logistics and Installation
The marshalling harbour for the project will be Terminal T5 in the Port of Gdańsk in Poland, which will serve as the logistics base for pre-assembly and load-out operations. Transportation and installation of the turbines will be handled by Cadeler, utilizing its specialized O-class vessels.
Strategic Significance
Ocean Winds, established as a 50-50 joint venture between EDP Renewables and ENGIE in 2020, views this project as a key component of Phase I offshore development in the Polish Baltic Sea. The BC-Wind project currently holds environmental decisions for both offshore and onshore components, as well as rights to a Contract for Difference (CfD).
Kacper Kostrzewa, Managing Director for Poland at Ocean Winds, emphasized the project’s importance: “This project not only underscores our commitment to renewable energy but also affirm that the Baltic Sea is a crucial market for us”.
The selection of Siemens Gamesa as the turbine supplier represents a major milestone in the project’s development, bringing it closer to contract finalization and positioning the project for a Final Investment Decision expected within 2025. This agreement reinforces the growing momentum of offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea region and Poland’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio.
