Morawiecki: I appeal to the European People’s Party to abandon the Nord Stream 2 project

I appeal to the European People’s Party to give up Nord Stream 2. Mr Donald Tusk, you are the head of the EPP, please do something about it, please persuade your colleagues from Germany, the Netherlands, to give up this very harmful project, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Friday.

The head of government said at a press conference that Germany and Russia have decided to build a second line of the Northern Gas Pipeline in the context of the gas crisis and price hikes.

– The project is strongly supported by the European People’s Party, Mr Donald (Tusk), as far as I know you are the head of the European People’s Party. Please do something about it, please persuade your colleagues from Germany, from the Netherlands to give up this very harmful project, which gives a tool to President (of Russia Vladimir) Putin to further raise prices,” Morawiecki asked Tusk. – I appeal to the European People’s Party to abandon the Nord Stream 2 project,” the prime minister repeated.

Construction of the pipeline, which runs from Russia to Germany on the bottom of the Baltic Sea bypassing Ukraine and Poland, was completed in September this year. However, Nord Stream 2 still needs to be approved for use by German and EU regulators. Nord Stream 2’s certification process is not expected to be completed before the end of the first half of 2022.

In early January, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after a meeting with German diplomatic chief Annalena Baerbock that the pipeline would not be launched if Russia decides to resume its aggression against Ukraine.
