Gdynia: A new road viaduct linking railway lines to the port is being built

Work is underway on a new road viaduct in Gdynia at the junction of the roads with the tracks leading to the seaport. A temporary support for the construction of the flyover structure is ready at the Pucka Street site, and the area for the construction of retaining walls is being prepared, a representative of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. informed.

As Przemysław Zieliński from the press team of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. informed, the collision-free crossing is a joint investment of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. and the City of Gdynia worth PLN 65 million net. The project is subsidised by the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020.

According to the company’s authorities, vehicle traffic at the junction with the railway lines leading to the Gdynia port will be improved by a road viaduct under construction along Pucka Street in Gdynia. The preparatory work necessary to begin construction of the flyover is currently underway. The temporary support is ready, which will be used to build the target structure of the structure, and part of the telecommunications and energy collisions have been rebuilt. A diversion has been prepared for residents, which is necessary to begin the construction of the retaining walls.

A member of the Management Board of PKP Polskie Linii Kolejowe S.A., Arnold Bresch, stated at a press conference in Gdynia that the viaduct, as far as the structure is concerned, will be completed by the end of the year, and it is planned to finish all the work by autumn next year.

The length of the new viaduct will be 185 metres and the width 18.15 metres. The structure will have two lanes, a 1.5-metre pedestrian walkway and a cycle path. The viaduct will ensure greater safety on railway lines No. 228 Rumia – Gdynia Port Oksywie and No. 201 Bydgoszcz – Gdynia.

As the company explains, the investment will also benefit residents, who will be able to travel more efficiently by car from the Tri-City ring road and the centre of Gdynia towards its northern districts, including Pogórze, Obłuż and Oksywie.

The investment “Construction in Gdynia in the course of ul. Pucka of a road viaduct over the track system of the Gdynia Port station together with the elimination of the rail-road crossing in ul. Pucka cat. A in km. 6.005 of railway line no. 228” is being carried out in agreement with the city of Gdynia for a net amount of approximately PLN 65 million, of which PLK SA’s contribution is approximately PLN 19 million net.

PLK SA is applying for funding for the project from the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020. According to the agreement with the City of Gdynia, PLK SA is financing the construction of part of the viaduct over the railway line and the removal of the railway-road crossing, while the City is financing the construction of the road system and the remaining part of the viaduct.

The investment in Gdynia is part of a nationwide project entitled ‘Improving safety at railway-road crossings – Stage III’. Within the framework of the nationwide project, worth approximately PLN 268 million, with the participation of European Union funds from the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme, PLK SA, in cooperation with local government units, is replacing railway-road crossings with collision-free crossings. The aim is to increase safety and provide more convenient communication.

Throughout Poland, the project includes 21 facilities: road and rail viaducts, subways and pedestrian/cycle overpasses. The effects are already being used by residents of eight towns and cities, including Kostrzyn (Wielkopolska), Sokółka (Podlaskie) and Skierniewice (Łódzkie).
