Baltica 2 team at the T5 construction site in Gdańsk

Representatives of PGE Baltica and Ørsted, including port specialists, were introduced to the progress of the terminal construction, which will be used to install the turbines of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm. Representatives of Istrana, the company implementing the T5 project, and Baltic Hub, in the vicinity of which the new terminal is being built, spoke about the ongoing works and the role of QHSE standards during the construction of the project.

The site visit was also attended by representatives of the general contractor – Sopot-based company NDI, the contract engineer – Royal Haskoning DHV, and the Polish Development Fund (PFR), which is a co-owner of the Baltic Hub Container Terminal and leading shareholder of Istrana.

Here in Gdańsk the most modern installation terminal for the offshore wind industry in Poland is being constructed. The investment is crucial not only for construction of the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, but also for the development of the entire offshore wind energy program in our country. It is from here that we will carry out the installation of 107 turbines for our project, which is scheduled for 2027. The installation ports are an important part of building the local supply chain. It is here and around the terminal that new jobs will be created, as well as a network of cooperating companies. It is here that the life of the Polish offshore industry will be vibrant,” said Bartosz Fedurek, CEO of PGE Baltica.

Today’s visit is a great opportunity to see how work on the construction of the T5 terminal in Gdansk is progressing. When realising a joint investment, Ørsted and PGE are guided by a schedule to which the contracts signed with suppliers are closely linked. Therefore, the timely delivery of the installation port in Gdansk is a key factor for the success of the Baltica 2 project. As the largest ever renewable energy project in Poland, Baltica 2 will be at the forefront of Poland’s transition to green energy, producing green electricity to meet the needs of approximately 2.5 million Polish households,” said Ulrik Lange, VP and Managing Director of Baltica 2 project, Ørsted.

“The investment in the T5 terminal places Baltic Hub and PFR as two shareholders of Istrana in the role of leaders who significantly contribute to the country’s energy transformation. In order for offshore wind energy to have a chance to become an important component of the Polish energy mix, we as a country must have a Polish terminal for transshipment of elements needed to build offshore wind farms in this region of the Baltic Sea. This affects the possibility of building Polish supply chains, as well as the development and use of the significant potential of the region and the city of Gdańsk and the specialists working here,” added Lech Paszkowski, CEO of Istrana.

In 2024, PGE and Ørsted-owned Baltica 2 and Baltic Hub-owned Istrana signed an agreement to lease port space on which a T5 installation terminal for offshore wind farms will be built. PGE and Ørsted will use it for the storage, pre-assembly and offshore installation of turbine components for the Baltica 2 project. More than 21 hectares of space will be created with the increased carrying capacity necessary for offshore projects. The concept and shape of the terminal will allow for the simultaneous use of the total length of quays comprising two loading berths for jack-up installation vessels, an unloading quay and a ramp for unloading ro-ro transport vessels.

The Baltica 2 project entered the offshore construction phase this year. Work will soon begin to prepare the seabed for foundations and the laying of submarine cables. Construction of the onshore connection infrastructure in the municipality of Choczewo has already been underway since mid-2024. The investors – PGE and Ørsted – have already took the final investment decision for the project. They have contracted key components necessary to start the construction of Baltica 2 offshore and have signed all the contracts for the installations – foundations, cables, turbines and offshore transformer stations. The partners have all the necessary construction permits. With 107 turbines with a total capacity of 1.5 GW, the Baltica 2 offshore wind farm will significantly contribute to the transformation of the Polish energy sector.
